A practical guide for academic librarians on adding a trusted, verified research layer to the AI tools your institution already has.
Your researchers are already using AI. The question is whether your library has a seat at the table.
ChatGPT, Claude, and Copilot are embedded in how research gets done now. Literature reviews, citation generation, synthesis tasks—it’s all happening, with or without library guidance. The problem is that AI-generated citations fail between 3% and 27% of the time, and the subtle failures (real papers, wrong findings) are the ones that slip through.
Libraries are uniquely positioned to fix this. Trusted and connected across every department on campus, the library is the institution’s natural home for responsible AI adoption. This session is about making that case, then giving you the tools to act on it, including the AI-powered research platform Scite.
Based on daily conversations and collaboration with university librarians who are implementing AI, we’ll cover:
The technical basics (what LLMs actually are, why hallucination happens, what MCP means) The strategic and operational questions librarians are wrestling with (how to build a budget case, how to evaluate tools, how to partner with faculty, how to use AI adoption data to demonstrate collection value) This session is for academic and research services librarians navigating AI adoption on campus and library directors looking to lead institutional AI policy conversations, not just respond to them. No technical background required.
