Online SciFlow & University Presses: Publishing a Diamond Open Access Journal in English or any local language

Kdy: 30. 6. 2022, 14:00 – 15:00
Vložné: zdarma, nutná registrace

Libraries and University Presses support researchers in creating their Open Access Journals. Digital infrastructure and workflow tools like OJS or DSpace are hosted at the institution.

One missing workflow part in the past is the creation of production formats, like HTML, PDF, and JATS-XML. Often an MS Word file is converted into PDF, resulting in various problems such as poor mobile reading, inconsistent metadata, and time-consuming formatting or converting texts.

For the latest issue of the New American Studies Journal (NASJ), The University of Göttingen used SciFlow to convert manuscripts to PDF and HTML using SciFlow.

This master class will give insights into their workflow:

  • MS Word manuscripts to SciFlow to OJS.
  • Transforming MS Word files to production formats with SciFlow
  • Handling metadata
  • A collaborative editing process
  • How SciFlow and OJS are working together

Webinář proběhne v angličtině.

Přednášející / Speakers:
Daniel Beucke (Publisher & Scrum Master at the University of Göttingen)
Frederik Eichler, co-founder of SciFlow

Online Open Standards for Writing and Citing - how SciFlow works together with reference managers and publishing tools

Kdy: 7. 7. 2022, 14:00 – 15:00
Vložné: zdarma, nutná registrace

Next-generation digital Publishing goes beyond PDF ebooks. Texts are treated like a semantic model consisting of references inside and outside the publications. Citations, annotations, personas, and places are examples to put the publications into a broader context. Single-Source Publishing workflows based on XML build the foundation for distributing those texts in various formats across different channels and keeping references intact and dynamic.

Open standards in writing and publishing and tools based on standards simplify those workflows. For disciplines and types of publications, various standards exist. One of the essential writing tasks in every field is efficiently handling references in the text. Writing scientific texts with better quality and less effort can be achieved if authors utilize a text editor suited for academic needs and a reference manager. Combining these two tools will be the topic of this master class.

The master class will provide examples of how SciFlow, Zotero, and other reference managers use common open standards efficiently and profitably. The topics will be addressed in the webinar:

  • Overview of open standards in academic publishing
  • Brief introduction of Zotero and SciFlow.
  • Connecting reference managers to SciFlow
  • Writing and citing in SciFlow.
  • Automatically creating references and source lists.

We take it further by dealing with Citation Style Language (CSL) in Zotero and SciFlow as an example (more tools are integrated).

Webinář proběhne v angličtině.
